Rear Projection LCD TV

Managed to get into town today without the wife and kids. As a result, I spent my time in all the electronic shops, instead of Dorothy Perkins. In the Sony store, I came across a rather nice looking 50" Bravia, HD ready LCD3 rear projection tv. (model no KDFE50A12TNS). It cost £1200, significantly less than the equivalent sized plasma.

I really fancy this as I've heard lots of horror storys about plasma lifespans.

I've currently got a Phillips 32" widescreen that cost £1300 a few years ago. It's a great tv and will I see any benefits by upgrading. The wife is hoping someone will talk me out of it. I'm hoping someone will offer to buy the Phillips.

Nice bit of kit but what you've got to bare in mind is its' weight. Will the roof lining take the weight? When the screen is down will it effect the view through your rear view mirror?....... need I go on?

serious note (but LMAO at Gary) I have a thomson rear projection 42in and cannot fault it. Like you say much less than a Plamsa and a longer life span. The picture is incredibly clear and its like going to the cinema to watch movies!!

you know you need it -it will complete your life!! (thats my excuse)

Been looking at whats around with TVs for a while as mine is getting old/tired. As far as I can see:

LCD's seem to be long life but have a terrible picture (ghosting on moving objects- even on the most expensive ones I've seen),

Plasma - definition not good (tend to look good in the shop but looking at my M8's who has one - they look pants unless you watch something like 'toy story' - then they look fantastic) and as MLC says lots of stories about not lasting very long,

Rear projection - use existing crt technology and have a clear pic - but take up a lot of room (compared to LCD/Plasma and work best in a darkened room

CRT - excellent pictures, proven technology - but are no longer fashionable (and hence cheap as chips) and the bigger flat screens are very bulky


It seems most TV's are bought for their 'apperance' nowadays rather than the quality of the picture. I'm guessing - but this may be because about 5-6 years ago (before plasma/lcd etc) you could not buy a TV with a c**p picture (crt Technology had levelled out) no matter how little you spent. Then TVs started to look better (to distinguish themselves from the crowd - silver/flat etc) - so then people bought one which they thought looked the nicest.........and that continues with fashion.

THe sony one is a new rear projection Bravia, HD LCD that's actually very slim. It uses 3lcd technology and was very bright and didn't darken when you moved to the side. Crystal clear picture. The problem is that's it's so new, I can't find any user reviews.

I'm sorely tempted, but my current Phillips is such a great tv (looks good too) that it's hard to come up with a decent excuse for the wifes benefit.

Get "the kids" to knock a glass of coke over it. I was told by a telly engineer that it will totally wreck it!! Then claim for a new telly on your insurance!!!
