    Default egr valve update!

i took the engine cover off today to see where the glow plugs go and on the underside of the cover directly above the egr valve there is a big sooty patch on it and a bit of soot around a small rectangular hole in the top of the egr valve, does anyone know if this is normal or not and if anyone could have a quick look under theirs for me it would be a great help, thanks (2004 cdti 120)

Sounds suspiciously like your egr valve is leaking through to the outside world thus explaining the soot.

The EGR valve redirects the exhaust gases back around again and there should be no outlet to the outside world. I'm not 100% but i think these ones do have gaskets on them (maybe someone can confirm this), if the EGR valve is kput it would cause rough running at low RPM only, this is due to the fact the the EGR mainly comes into play at low revs.
