    Default Cat C Advice

Right then, my misssus is tired of the 1996 Golf Gti I bought her last year and wants a newer more economical and lady friendly car. She's set her heart on a Clio Dci 1.5 Its 60mpg £35 a year on tax so means i've more to spend on the Veccy!!! Trouble is they are a premium over the standard cars, your looking about 4k for a 2002 Anyhow I've found a Cat C registered now fully repaired (good standard) and its been through its MOT etc, question is how dodgy are these cars? will the insurance screw me over and will it be difficult to sell on? I've looked at one thats a 2003 model, fully repaired, all the extras and only 30k on the clock, backed up with 3 services and previous MOT's, is it worth a punt at £3k, thats kinda my limit, blimey I've gone on a bit, oops cheers in advance

Difficult to sell on? yes. I'd want at least 25% off the normal price for a cat C.

As long as its been declared and if it needed a cert to say its been done correctly it shouldn't make much difference

Mmmmm Renault Dci engines, wouldn't be me especially if you do short journeys. I believe they have a serious habit of blowing there turbos up with the stuck EGR/engine running on oil problem. In fact I believe Renault set up the 'Yellow OTS Scheme' to look at the Dci engine problems on a case to case basis.

i personally wouldn't touch a cat C without a full AA or equivalent inspection. it would have to be seriously cheap and a seriously good repair!

cat-c or cat-d cars do not need notification to your insurers. i have only owned damaged cars that have been repaired by my dad (his work), depenant on their cat status some go for a VIC check and will have their v5 stamped accordingly. Remember it is the insurance companies that put a repairable 'cat-c or d' on a car which means they are happy it can be repaired and therefore as such happy to insure it again. It is true you should expect about 25% reduction in the purchase price though, because some people are sceptical of damaged repaired cars some can be picked up cheaper than this!!

    I have to Echo 'Biglad'....

The DCi is a TERRIBLE engine...avoid at all costs...we have two in the family and i end up decoking the EGR every 6,000 miles....We got stiffed by renault.. turbo went 3 days out of warranty and they didn't want to know...Have a look on the 'parkers' forum .. there's a big renault section there and funilly enough quite a large 'problem' section there and it's all Clio and DCI..

Mark - very wise advice indeed.

Laguna - 3 years and 96000 miles - with the car breaking down every other week. Everything that could go wrong with a DCI engine did - turbo eating its own oil twice. Avoid this engine at all costs. Renault service and customer service is even worse than Fiat.

On the other hand vectra 1.9 48K miles in 20 months - no problems.

Back to topic - cat D, maybe, cat C, no.

The wife used to own a a Fiat, and I find this statement difficult to believe. I didn't know it was actually humanly possible to be worse than what Fiat were like.
