mine is smooth at all levels of speed. Its a belt so no chain to be noisy.
it has a good induction roar at high speeds n revs high. (K & N panel filter installed).

    Vehicle : Pre-Facelift

    Trim : LS

    Engine : 1.8 Petrol

    Year : 2003

    I've got a 52 plate 1.8 16v it's done just over 60,000 and it's as smooth as silk.

In fact you have to be standing right next to it before you can even hear the engine at tick over.

It does suffer with a "flat spot" (but it's not "lumpy") which I'm hoping to cure by doing the airbox mod.

actually its not bad on tickover but say your holding it on the clutch on a slope sounds a bit knocky/lumpy. is that normal?

A few years ago my mate had the older 1.8 think it was a 52 plate, He bought it new but it sounded a bit gruff. But saying that he drove it like he stole it.

Hows your mpg figures has that fallen recently? Thats usually a way to tell if their is something wrong. Does the rev counter idle smothly?
