    Default BMW Swirl Flaps

I know that swirl flap failure is quite common on the cdti engine but it could be worse, I spent many years working on BMW engines and when the swirl flaps fail on a BMW common rail engine they break off and get sucked straight into the engine, they then get smashed up and spat out of the exhaust valve straight into the turbo. If you are really unlucky you will need a whole new engine, you might get away with new head/valves and a turbo but whatever happens its really expensive.

I forgot to mention the world war 2 style smoke screen from the exhaust as the turbo fails and the engine starts running on its own engine oil

OK techie type people......What is a swirl flap...what's it's job and where does it live???.

I know engines, but swirl flap is a new one on me!!

Presumably it swirls something, in a flappy kind of way!

    Or does it.....

... it could actually flap, swirling stuff!

Or it could swirls, flapping stuff??

Hell I don't know.... the DTi probably doesn't have one anyway, and if it did, it would be made of such low quality monkey metal, that it would melt when it got even near a cylinder, so no harm done to yhe engine, except a new flap, for swirling.

    Cheers
