Believe this can cause poor 'pull' below 2000rpm and also cause extra soot to be put out the exhaust if a diesel.
Yep mine has gone and is awaiting repair. Below 2k revs, the car simply accelerates at a snails pace, even with the foot to the floor. Its like severe turbo lag. The turbo then builds up and the effect is overcome by 2500 revs where, with your foot on the floor you zoom off like a rocket. Very acward to drive around town, lots of slipping the clutch. To get it to go from a standing start like at a junction, you have to set the car up like your going to do a big wheel spin, thats just to get it moving without stalling.
Just joined this forum .............should have earlier ,would have found out the problem with my car ...the egr valve knackered . you've described the symptoms exactly . Going in to VX next week for a new one .
Yes, been there. Mine was a bit more serious though. Long story too!
In short, took my 2 year old boy to Demon Tweeks in Wrexham as my brother was getting some work done on his car and wanted the company. As I went to go home, got 100 yards, and the car (Vectra cdti 150) just died! Got her going again, but the revs wouldn't (period) go above 2500, and getting it there took ages, then all of a sudden it would take off, but then die again. Called the AA, got hooked up to the laptop. Knckered air flow meter and EGR. Mechanic reckoned one problem will have caused the other, although he wasn't sure in which order. Also said it's fairly common in CDti's (esp. 150) and also Saab's which use the same engine. Had to drive home with him following about 35 miles. Took ages, and going up the hills was a joke. Seeing as I'm a rotten father, didn't take any spare nappies (doh!! forgot) and the car stank for a week of childs "accidents".
Getting to vaux. dealer next day which is 5 miles took 40 mins it had got so bad. They fixed it free under warranty, but otherwise would have cost a fortune as it's a big job to change the EGR. Hope it doesn't happen again and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!
Hope yours is fixed though!
Getting mine done on Saturday morning by a local independant dealer...diag was £25 and the job will cost £150. Shop around.
When you chaps had to get your EGR changed, did you have a spanner light up? I have a similar issue, quite easy to stall pulling away, but I have no spanner light saying that the EGR has failed.
Wifes Astra had a failed EGR valve and the spanner light came on for this.
Cheers,
Mark
No spanner light - emissions light only, and even that was only intermittent. Been running great since.
You are right, it was the emissions light on the Astra also. I have never had any light at all though and it has recently passed MOT.
Anyone know of a way to test if it is working, or if it needs cleaning??
Cheers.
Spanner light came up on mine but only once. It was on for around a second then went off.
