Default How much horsepower has this got ?

Just been looking at some of last years holiday snaps and came across these.
This is space shuttle Atlantis launching from Kennedy Space Centre last June on its way to the International Space Station.

Picture 4, If you look in the centre of the picture , you can just see the building that they store the shuttles in and is absolutely MASSIVE !

Picture 5, Parking is at a premium as everyone for miles around comes to watch the launch. It took me about an hour to get to our view point just outside Port Canaveral, then it took 3 hours + to get back to Orlando !!!

I was there in 1999, but didn't get to see a launch.
I need to go back some day, because my camera broke while I was there, and I none of the pictures came out.
I did get to use the payphone at the Launch pad 39A complex to ring my mate back home and gloat about where I was, though!

The three main engines of the space shuttle EACH produce 418,000lbs of thrust.
Thats not taking into account the rocket boosters.

To put that into context a modern 747 produces 253'000lbs of thrust and that has 1 more engine than the shuttle!

NASA quote 7 million pounds of thrust for the shuttle engines and rocket boosters combined, & 37 million horsepower for the shuttles main engines ....

Makes my 140BHP seem pretty hopeless!!

Space flight doesn't exist, the US never went to the moon, and satellite TV actually works through the mobile phone network. The moon is actually a hangar in Nevada (area 51).

Really. There's lots of people on the interweb that can prove it.

It takes between 45 mins to an hour depending on the time of day. That route is quite busy at rush hour, even more so when the shuttles going up as it's the main highway to Kennedy/Canaveral and its a toll road so expect long Q's. Make sure you take plenty to drink as it's very hot sitting there waiting for it to launch. September temps average 90c
