    Unhappy Alloys vs potholes....

Just wondering if anyone had ever had any luck getting the council to pay (or help towards) the cost of repairing an alloy wheel damaged as a result of a mahoosive pothole?

If so, what's the best way to go about it?

    Thanks

I did, eventually. It's a long story but I was going to work one morning and BANG! It was dark early morning and I never spotted it, there had been some roadworks and they hadn't repaired the hole correctly.

It wrecked and alloy and the tyre. I wrote to the council sending them a map of the area it happened with an arrow showing the sight of the pothole and an estimate from two garages for the cost of the supply and fitting of a new wheel and tyre. I didn't take any picture of the pothole or the damage but I'm sure this sort of evidence if you have/can get it would strengthen your case.

It turned out in my case that it wasn't the councils responsibility, Yorkshire Water had been doing some work on a pipeso the council forwarded the claim on my behalf to Yorkshire Water. I then got a letter from Yorkshire Water saying that they had subcontracted the work to another utility company and they forwarded the claim on to them.

I eventually got a letter and a cheque from the company that had done the job saying that although they accepted no responsibility they were sending me a full and final settlement for the amount of the lowest estimate.

Long winded and took a couple of months but I got paid out in the end, if it's just down to wear and tear on the road I'm not sure what the outcome would be but I would say they should still be responsible for keeping the road in a good state of repair.

Not done it with alloys, but claimed for a new motorbike jacket and a new fairing once off the local council when a massive pothole threw me off a bike down an unlit lane one night in the dark. Went back the next day and took a photo of it from all angles with that days newspaper next to it to prove the date (before digital cameras). Kept the newspaper, got quotes for replacements, got the prints and sent the whole lot off to them. Coughed up with a cheque. Happy days.!

I did a few years ago Paul.

I hit a large hole in an unlit road & blew the tyre.

I got a new tyre plus wheel.

    I took pics & wrote a letter.

It took ages but I got a cheque.

its all a lot easier if the said pothole has been previously reported , as when its reporeted they council are then LIABLE for it and no investigation will be done .

Hmmm.... pics will be a pain, the offending pothole is in a tiny village where Sam's parents live, and they're currently resurfacing all the roads. Will have to try and get back there before they cover it up

I would say that the fact they are resurfacing the roads means they know that they are goosed, could Sam's parent get some pics for you if you tell then where it happened, just a thought.
