    Default Cost of first service?

Just rung up my main stealer to ask about my cars first service.

They have quoted me £185.When asked what they did they replied an oil change and filter and check the levels etc. Also they mentioned an emission service.

Whats an emission service and surly £185 is way too much for a first intrim service?

What do other main dealers charge for a first service?

I think i'm trying to be ripped off

My first service cost me £147 i thought that was enough for a bit of oil and a filter but most of that cost is labour as they do spend some time looking around the cars to make sure all is ok.

All of 1 minute that takes

Trouble with a new car is you have to have the service done at vx for warranty reasons? Something I'm about to fins out if my new car ever arrives

^^ not neccessarily.. maybe to keep a full vx service history for resale value... but as long as its a vat registered garage and use vx approved oe or oem parts then take it anywhere and save yourself some £££!!

as long as the garage you take it to stamp your book with the vat number if applicable, and tick the bits etc they have changed and serviced, then there should be no probs whatsoever.. plus u will save yourself a wad of cash for the mod fund!

VX servicing is a racket, IMO. They try to convince you that you need VX dealer to service to keep warranty (without actually saying it as this would be an ILLEGAL practice), as above is correct about anywhere can service as long as VAT registered (for traceability) use VX service schedule and use genuine parts (or even equivalent parts that match OE spec - which may be hard to prove sometimes).

In my experiences of part ex'ing, dealer service means absolutely nothing to residual values. I self service (and always will) and stamp the book to say it is all done (nothing wrong with that), come P'X time when they mention service, 'full service history, non dealer' say I, they say 'dealer service makes no difference, as long as it's been done and stamped'.

The checks they also do are basic fluids and tyre checks anyway, we ALL should do these regularly, and not just at service time anyway. So, basically you are paying through the nose for what??

Long life oil and oil filter for 1.8 petrol is about £30 over the VX counter (they will get it far cheaper of course - got to turn a profit on parts), so where's the rest go??

I personally see no point at all in going to dealer for servicing, but each to their own, it's your money you are needlessly paying out.... and getting nothing in return for
