I'd hazard a guess it's the ever common boost hoses - common problem on that engine. Check all the boost hoses, especially underneath, for the slightest of splits - that'll be enough to bring on the spanner light. I assume you had a big drop in power too?

There's a modified hose (strengthened) available that is meant to reduce the chances of it happening again.

It should've logged some error codes, but it all depends how they've interpreted those. It may have been something like 'Boost out of range' and they've assumed it's a sensor, when what happens is that due to the pressure escaping through a split, the boost is increased as a sensor downstream detects a drop, but then when it's increased the sensor upstream goes "Wooah, too much boost" and logs and error and drops pops up a spanner.

The fact that they've said you need a new thermostat due to a spanner light coming on makes me question their diagnosing abilities. I'm pretty sure a dodgy thermostat doesn't throw up a spanner light, although I may be wrong. Were there any symptoms of a dodgy thermostat? - engine temp not increasing, cabin cold etc. If not then why did they replace the thermostat.

My money is still, currently, on the boost hoses. It would be good if you could find out what error codes were read off.

i can try and find them engine temp was slow the car only seems to do it when going from 4th to 5th gear when u need it most and doesnt happen everytime so i could go to 70 easy then come all way back down the gears then back up and then then the spanner light on i thought the problem was on the computer itself the way it going

The split hose issue is more likely to show it's symptoms when you're demanding more boost - so that could be in different gears but at low revs i.e. when the demand for boost is increased.

Try it in a few gears to see if it does it in them. i.e. let the revs drop fairly low and then give it a bit of throttle to accelerate, this will cause an increase in demand for boost and will be the time when the problem is more likely to occur - if it's the split hose issue.

have the actually given you the codes for whats wrong?..or are they guessing it?..

it could be one of quite a few things to be fair..dirty boost sensor, dodgy vacumn solenoid and hosing.....

If it's not been code read then nows the time...
