Fuel Problems on 1.8

Hi guys

as my last thread ive just recently bought a 53 reg 1.8 vectra, its got 60k on the clock with FSH. Last service was done at dealers 2k ago but for some reason somethings not right.

I tanked the car the other day and ive only got 60miles to the top quater of the tank infact its less than 3/4 . Out of the 60 odd miles that are on the clock at the moment 30 of which are motorway miles.


I tanked it when i bought it and i only got 220 miles to the tank and by the way its going this time it appears that im probably going to get less.

Any ideas what could be the problem im sure this isnt the economy i should be getting because i was getting more out of my 1.8 turbo cupra.

Any advice would be more than appreciated.

I have a 1.8 mate and get about 330 mile to the tankfull,not too sure what to suggest mate,get it booked in somewhere that specialise's in tuning,hope that helps.......

Well im not a Vectra expert, so cant comment on any "common vectra" faults that may be causing this, but have you checked anything so far? If not, a few easy things to check to start with might be.

1. Tire pressures
2. Wheel alignment, is the tracking correct, look for tire wear.
3. Brakes rubbing/Wheelbearings. Jack each wheel up in turn and spin it to check for any abnormal drag. Or take it on a run, then touch the wheels, if they are hot then something isnt right.
4. Is it running rich? Take a look at a spark plug, if its black, then something isnt right.

With my 1.8, from a full tank, zero trip meter, to when light comes on, can range from 330 to 420 miles depending how I've been driving.
(I got over 400 when driving very steady, won't be doing it again )

It's usually around 340 - 360 every week though.

mainly town driving

i get quite good mpg in my 2.0T about 30-35mpg on a run but i have noticed in the vectra if you get a heavy right foot you could get about 17mpg,but on yours something sounds wrong ask gsi3.2 he knows alot good luck

thanks for the replies.

ive done all the obvious things but still nothing got it booked in 2morw for new fuel filter and a once over see what happens but this does need sorting its definately not right by the looks of it im getting half what i should be getting

Out of interest, have you made sure that its not just a faulty fuel guage? They aren't particularly accurate, my light comes on and it says 30 miles left, but when I fill up I only get 45 litres into the tank...

mine said i had 1/4 of a tank last night and this morn nearly on empty so they all must be like that. also i find this 1.8 nearly as bad as my 2.5 v6 vec b.
