Default Excessive road noise on some roads in Signum Design

    I recently bought a 2006 Signum Design 1.9CDTi.

When I test-drove the Signum, it cruised nice & quietly on a dual-carraigeway. There was some road-noise, but no worse that my old 1999 Vectra.

It now seems that the road I test-drove on was very smooth.

Having since clocked up some miles, I am frustrated by how noisy the Signum can be, depending upon the road surface. On rough road surfaces, even at speeds as low as 40mph, there is a droning noise, seemingly from the back of the car. When I get to 70mph on such roads, the noise is annoyingly loud. I can tell from the change in noise level when the road surface changes: - this is far more noticeable in the Signum than in my old Vectra.

The Signum can be quiet at 70mph if the road surface is smooth, so I think the problem is related entirely to road noise rather than anything relating to wind-noise.

I'm wondering if the problem is just due to the tyres. These are Goodyear Eagle NCT5 215/50 R17 all-round. Has anyone else solved road-noise problems by changing to a different make of tyre? If so, which make of tyre?

I also wondered if the problem is the low profile of the tyres on the Signum. My old 1999 Vectra had 195/65 R15 tyres and I was quite happy with them. Would it be worth trying to get different size wheels for the Signum so that I could fit higher-profile tyres, in the hope that it might reduce the road-noise? (I realise this could affect handling and insurance, but if I can't resolve the noise problem then I'll have to trade the Signum).

    It's the NCT 5 tyres I'm afraid.
Got 2 on the back, which are not too bad generally, but can be a bit loud on poor surfaces.

Got Goodyear Excellence tyres on the front - far better than the NCT 5 tyres that they replaced....

    Default Just change rear tyres?

    Thanks for the reply.

My noise seems to come from the rear of the car. So I was wondering about changing just the rear tyres. Do you think this would fix the noise problem?

(I guess I could end up with the opposite config of what you've got, if I get Goodyear Excellence for the rear, and leave the front as Goodyear Eagle NCT5)

From your description, I'd also say the tyres are the likely culprit. I'd change to a different one when you next need to change tyres. If it was a wheel bearing, a possibility, you'd hear it on all road surfaces.

thats what I was thinking Duncan - poss. wheel bearing, but that surely would show up on all road surfaces, not just the rough ones.

On most surfaces, the NCT 5 is not bad, but on some, it is awful!

yep, simply a combination of road surface type and tyre type..that and the fact that there is no sound deadening on the rear arches which amplifies the howl...

That sounds exactly the same story as mine, but my Signum has Bridgestone
Potenzas all round, the road noise on course surfaces is terrible, but as there's
loads of tread left I'm reluctant to bin them

My Siggy has the 18" Potenzas all round too and the road noise (on most roads and at pretty much any speed) is far greater than I had on my previous 2 Siggy's (albeit they only had 17" wheels on).

I am hoping to go to my local dealers to get them to check the wheel bearings in the hope it is that (as they would be covered under warranty). My only other alternatives would be to change the tyres (I dont usually keep my cars long enough to warrant doing this), selling the 18" alloys and finding a set of 17" alloys instead OR changing the car!

If it is the wheels and/or tyres, should this really be something you should expect to get used to on a car manufacturers' top of the range motor?
