Default What's required to replace springs and shocks?- Advice please.

    Hi all,

I'm going to fit Eibach springs and Bilstein B4 shocks all round on my 1.9 CDTI SRi 150, 55 plate facelift.

Apart from the springs and shocks, what else will I need to completely carry out the work, ie, re-alighnment, special sockets etc.

Thanks. PS, does the end of the spring need to have a sleeve as per original etc?

you'll need spring compressors for the front struts, torx insert bits and a 21mm box spanner or the like to undo the top nut..

18mm socket and spanner, E18 and E20 torx socket and a tiny torx for the electrical bracket on the front struts..a pair of grips for the brakepipe spring clip iirc the top 3 strut mounts are E12

you can transfer the spring sleeves over, superglue them to the new springs, and run some copper grease in the springpan groove.. it all helps..

Rear shocks - E20 and E18 torx socket

Front shocks - 18mm socket, 18mm spanner, 17mm spanner, spring compressors. There are 3 torx bolts at the top of the strut don't know the size but can check if required.

BIG TIP - you will need a t50 torx bit and a 21mm spanner for the top of the strut to remove the spring. I had to buy a box spanner to remove the bolt. Loosen the nut ( do not remove) when the strut is still on the car.

Try the top nut first before you remove anything as this is the only hard part.

A trolley jack is handy to lift the suspension arms.

17mm spanner is for behind the drop link to hold it as it will just spin on the 18mm socket.

Thanks for the advice so far. looks like I have to buy a few more tools first.

What about wheel alignment afterwards?, will this be required?.

My plans changed since yesterday so going to look at replacing the exhaust as well due to the Tax man sending me a cheque for £735

P.S. Is the Haynes manual out yet?, and if so, where's the best place to get a copy?

Sorry for all the questions, but I like to do my homework before doing the practical.

    Thanks again for your help

    Chocki.

Planning on lots of pics and a full how to inc parts, tips etc.

if you fit lowering springs then yes, a full 4 wheel alignment is required.. toe and camber..

Halfords sell the haynes manual, so pick one up if you are less than 100% confident..

this might sound a silly question but how do you get the rear springs out?
