Acetone in fuel/your views?

When i had my old vec b i used to add acitone to the fuel as per the link im adding and it actually worked.it did nothing to the engine but made it run smoother and and did up my mpg a fraction. Now my question is does anyone on this site do it? Even though it worked before im a bit hesitant to do it on my new car.

acetone will do nasty stuff to your paintwork if you spill some whilst adding to the tank

and there's others out there. I use it a lot in the marine industry with fibreglass repairs.

And, following on from VVOC posts, I think I will try it in my 2002/03 3.2 GSi at 1ml per litre fuel.

Neat acetone will easily melt plastic, filler pipe is plastic. Just a thought.

I'd be more worried about the fuel pump to be honest.

Added about 93ml of acetone to my last tank full (a concentration of around 0.001%). It increased my mpg from an average (last 14 tankfulls) of 46.8 to 53.2 - about 12% improvement.
I don't think any fuel line or pump will compalin about that concentration. Look at other "nasty" additives on the market. I don't hear people complaining about lines and pumps breaking with them in the fuel.
Someone said that acetone melts plastic. It depends on the plastic. Petrol melts some plastics - ask those who have put petrol into plastic pop bottles.

I have been reading the posts etc! regarding adding 'Acetone' to boost fuel economy and checking various articles on t'internet? and I decided to try it out for myself.
I waited until the car was serviced first and running perfectly! (monday) before carrying out this experiment. The Vec was running very sweetly (tuesday)
I emptied the 'Acetone' into my tank with the remaining 3-4 litres or so of fuel, I then filled the tank of my 1.8 SXI (53 plate) Vec with 46.77 litres of unleaded to ensure it got a good mix, smelled ok too !!!. (wednesday)
I got a 50ml bottle of the stuff from my local chemist which cost me 72p.
I was assured by the dispensing chemist that it was 100% pure acetone and additive free even though it did 'not' state this on the label?
I was'nt expecting anything to happen so soon after filling up?
The engine is certainly running smoother and throttle response feels instantaneous, maybe its the fact there are new plugs/filters/oil etc from the service but it definetly feels crisper and more responsive!
Watch this space and I will let you know if there is any boost to fuel economy with the first tank full ???

I settled for Nitrous instead.
Didn't do much for my mpg but it did loads for my mph
