Yesterday afternoon, i had to deliver to Kelloggs in Trafford Park, Manchester, then run up to Carlisle to load for Switzerlnd next week. Nice and easy, home for early hours Saturday..
So, tips Trafford park and heads off up the M6 to Carlisle, I knew i was in store for a bad time when every truck that came south had its curtains strapped back. Unfortunately, I have a trailer that is Euro Spec with a fabric roof and 40 odd metal boards inside, so i cannot strap my curtains back. Approaching Westmorland Services, the wind started to drag me from lane 1 to Lane 2/3, and i contemplated stopping at the services and letting the wind die off, but for some reason ignored my own warnings!
The next 12 minutes were the worst 12 minutes of my life, Quite literally i was a passenger in a truck that was getting battered by winds of what i later found out to be i excess of 70mph over Shap! I was driving my truck in the 2nd lane, the trailer was in the 3rd lane! as i apporached a 7.5t Truck about 1 mile from J39, a gust of wind caught it and put it up on 2 wheels, and no sooner had it dropped it did it again, and again and again. 5 times on total this little 7.5t was getting battered, I was convinced my time was up, and at that point decidd enough was enough and headed for the hard shoulder and shelter of a bridge under J39. I cut various vehicles up in the process but didnt actually care. When i stopped my legs went to jelly and i was absolutely terrified.
I phoned 999 to advise them of my position and she told me to phone another number. I was shaking that much i couldnt write down the number she gave me, so she had to transfer me across.
I eventually got a Police Escort into Shap Village and parked there for the night, until the wind had dies down this morning enough for me to be happy to drived in..
I can honestly say i have never been that scared in my entire life, i truly thought i had come to the end of the line as far as my life was concerned!
