Default IT help: how easy is it to....

...remove a hard-drive from a laptop and then get it fired up in a new 'host'.

my laptop has finally given up the ghost...i suspect it may be a power supply issue.

Depends on the laptop.... normally the lappys are easy to get the drive out of ( underneath will be a pannel ).... then you'll need a 2.5-3.5 IDE adaptor ( linitx.com are good ).... then when you fire it up you have to hope the Windows Advantage cack (depending on the version & OEM setup if any ) doesnt suddnely complain.... some times it does some times it doesnt.... but its hard to say with out my hands on it....

    Hope that helps.

well it's an old Compaq Evo N610c running Windows 2000 Professional if that sheds any light on how much of a pain it will be.

If you buy a harddrive enclosure (maplin sell them pretty cheap) then you can plug it into the usb port of another computer and retrieve any data. That should at least be pretty easy.

The Evos are easy to work on as they are aimed at the corporate market and the hard disk disk is easy to take out and you can get a USB adapter from Ebay for around £15-20 which you can plug into another computer and copy the files accross.

so can you actually run programs that are stored on the hard drive, or is it just giving you access to info.

i'm baffled by the amount of usb adaptors on ebay, how do i know which one i need?
