confused dealership trying to con me?

    Hello All,

    I'm Lewis.

Anyway, i recently purchased a 2003 2.2 dti with 45k miles. I was told it was quite a reliable car so i went with it. Cost me around £5k.

I took it to the local vauxhall con-me-ship and they told me it needs:

    3x new tyres.... (3x130)
    4x new brake pads (4x60)
    1x new rear spring (210)
    1x new battery (120)
    and :-(
1x new turbo (480 for recon)

the prices are fitted and with vat: total = £1440

I took it to my good friend who owns his own well ragarded garage and he chcecked it all over. Said my battery was showing up at over 100% on the machine that tests how good it was so i don't need another one just needed contacts cleaning. He checked everything and is doing the following:

    2 x Goodyear tyres (92 x2)
    1 x rear spring (75)
    2 x front brake pads (2x 40)
and i'm getting a full service with 100% syn oil for £110
So only having to pay: £449

He said the turbo sounds fine and the car drives fine.

    So my questions:

Should i still be worried about the turbo?? (the vaux told me it wasn't getting enough air, to which my friend replied in french)

    Are dealerships normally this bad??

Is a 2.2 dti a reliable car in general??

    Many thanks.

P.S please don't burn me for being stupid and buying this car in the first place...

only had the car about a fortnight so can't tell myself if theres any problems or not' It's fast top end but more slow(ish) on acceleration than i thought it would be but then it's a big old car.

Only thing that worries me is it had the car/spanner sign. Thats why i took it in. Hope it doesn't come back on, but they told me it was battery related error, but batt is fine - oh well. My mate tipped water over the battery while the engine was running i was like '!!!!!' but it cleared all the corrosion of the points so i should shut up.

I'm a little worried as it would appear Vx changed the Dti to the cdti which they wouldn't have done unless there was good reason. Or is this paranoia?

Perhaps if they'd put a new air filter in it would get enough, I agree complete horse.

The problem you might have is a mass air meter, the DTi was de-tuned from what it was in the B to what it is in the C and it's no GP car at all, when the meter goes tits up you lose acceleration but you would lose the top end as well so it's probably just you getting used to what is quite a slow car by modern standards, dam fine engine though.

I bought a 2.2DTi with 42k on the clock, its now got 63k. (15months later). I only had one problem with it and that was within a month or so of the Injector Seals or somthing. Basicly, wouldn't start after standing for a while (not get fuel to the engine). Other than that, touchwood, I've had no problems. Turbo, i know some have needed replacing around the 60k mark, but again, touchwood, mines been fine. (Also I should mention I havent serviced it since I've had it, 21k miles and 15months!!! Shall be booking that one in!)

They changed to Common Rail to get more power, and better emissions.

The 2.2 is a hard working lump.

Turbo not getting enough air ???? That would be a clogged air filter maybe?? As long as the oil feed from the main gallery is good, there should not be any issues with the actual turbo, remember not to over rev a cold engine, and wait when shutting down for a few seconds on idle. This helps to prolong the life of turbo's, as oil can circulate properly before giving it beans and at shut down allows a bit of time to cool down a little and allowing the turbo to spin down. Turbo can spin at STUPID speeds, eg 120,000 rpm.

Car with spanner light, did they give you any fault codes? You can easily look them up.

Sounds to me as if you need to change dealer, some are truly rubbish.

De-tuned? I didn't think they even put the 2.2DTI in the Vectra B...

They changed to the CDTI because it makes so much more power and has better or equal economy to go with it.
