    Default Buying car help.

How much does it cost to get a car hpi checked and who does it ? Can it be done without the owners permission ? Thinking about travelling from Durham to Blackpool at the weekend to have a look at a car (private seller). Its quite a bit to shell out and we dont want to get ripped off. If the car has finance owed on it can you pay it, then give the seller whats left (if any).

    any advice welcome.

That's tricky. You are right not to want to hand over your cash if there is finance still outstanding, but if you settle the finance for him/her, they will want to know that you have done it before they hand over the keys.

    HPI

If there's is finance on the car, contact the company directly. Pay the money to them via bank transfer and any remaining to the owner. On NO account give it all to the owner on the promise he will pay it. If he doesn't, then the car will be taken of you.

With regards to the finance you can phone them up and pay them over the phone while the seller is with you so you both know it has been payed, I always use hpi for checking because they refund the purchase price of the car if you buy it and the info they gave you is wrong.

I would HIGHLY recommend an AA/RAC check.
It's a couple hundred quid in most cases but they give the car a good going over and offer various guarantees etc etc.
Also a very good bargaining tool if the engineer does find something wrong.
When I did it I paid a deposit on the understanding that if the engineers report came back with something wrong then we would re-negotiate.
Turned out needed new front discs and pads so got £150 off the sale price which in effect paid for the inspection.

IMO, RAC or AA checks don't cover enough.

The wife's old car had an RAC inspection that was not worth the print out paper. It was totally useless. My best suggestion would be take some one who knows about cars with you for a thorough examination of the car.

If I was buying private, the fine tooth comb would be taken from my garage and used extensively on the car. My brother in law asked me to go with him to look at a car, after over an hour I gave him the report, grim reading it was too. BUT nearly everything can be fixed, for a price. We walked away though. Having a defect list is good for bargaining, as long as it's accurate.

Where in Blackpool are you going to view ?

If it's in St Annes and opposite a pub that it's named after don't bother, they sell tat.
