    is there much difference in hardness of ride between these 2 sizes

    none mate... 225/45/17 will possibly give u better grip as its a wider tyre... the 45/17 have loads more choice and are cheaper too..!

    wont bother me that much its the passengers im thinking of in the back
    car share to work so have 3 adults in the back at most times
    just dont wont it to be as bad as my mates bmw 2.0d sports 3 series
    that is really bad glad we only do 20 mile to work,any further and id be sick.dame s**t ride far too stiff

    Changed mine and have noticed no difference other than the price of the tyres!

    If you want to keep the same circumference as the 215x50x17, then you'll need to go for the 225x45x17's. Any other size will mess with the speedo accuracy. See http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html (the tyre size calculator).
