Any Ideas...Its a tough one

This maybe an unusual one, but me and a friend are into off road biking and want to get some helmet cameras. Altho the usual problem of money has arisen once again. Does anybody know a cheaper alternative that could be used? Ive looked into using my phone and ipod as a hardware capure and storage but cannot get an external camera. Anyway the best idea so far is to use My webcam and connect it to an old laptop that we have, that has not been used in months. Strap the cam onto the helmet and put the laptop in a rucksack. Problems being webcams capture rate is rubbish, and the laptop may freeze with all the vibrations and rough ride of the bike. I dont mind spending money on new equipment as long as it is not going to break the bank.
