    Default Computer Boffin Required

    I have a problem with my PC that is running on Windows XP can anyone help ?

    1/ My plug & play Samsung MP3 player is not reconised

    2/ I now have a TOMTOM 520, and that is not being reconised either,...although it does sometime get reconised,it shows on the device manager,it does not Auto start its programme.

    I know that both the MP3 & tht TOMTOM work as I have tried them both on my daughters laptop

    I am told I need to back up my computer and re load windows...next problem the F drive [cd writer] is stating not accessable !,so I have purchased an external hard drive ......guess what? when I plug it in to the USB ports it is not reconised.

    I feel that I have a chicken & egg situation here

    Any suggestions please ?...that a numbnut can understand.

    Uninstall your chipset drivers, (will be intel or something like that depending on your motherboard). Restart, then download the drivers from the motherboard manufacturers website. Restart and all should be well. If its not then your motherboard may be giving up (ive had this before at my work) or you could to do a repair install of xp if its not hardware related (you wont lose any data). Hope this helps a bit..!

    1 - Just reboot

    2 - Control panel -> add hardware

    3 - Computer management, see if it shows up in disc config

    4 - Have them connected at boot up time.

    Or your USB cable is cacked.

    Repair XP is like find the gremlin in a car fault, you'll probably end up with NTLDR missing or something similar, use the find new hardware 1st and if that doesn't work try another cable.

    Followed your method VV,but when I hit the add new hardware it did not show up after its search,
    It has got to be somthing to do with widows as it all the "mass storage" devices that do not get reconised ie MP3,TOMTOM,& the ext hard drive,so that brings it to the chipset route,how do I find them ?,do not forget you are dealing with a silver haired computer numbnut here
