    Default Quick oil questions

The manual states 5w-40 from the factory for the 1.9 150 engine, it doesnt state synth or semi-synth. Any ideas?

Can changing oil in a diesel engine change the feel of an engine the way it does in a petrol?

I have always treated my cars to the best possible oils, and changed on or before the manufacturers recommendation. I would go with synthetic, it doesnt degrade so its ok for 20,000 miles.

Always go for the best oil you can afford, full synthetic is the choice of all manufacturers on high performance engines with long drain intervals, now up to 50,000km or 30,000 miles the normal accepted drain interval which is well within the capacity of the oil.
Company I work for runs full synthetic 5W40 in it's trucks for 200,000km or 120,000 miles or 1 year, whichever is sooner.
If you use premium brand 0W40, 5W40 or 5W50 full synthetic and change evey 30,000km or 20,000 miles you are well within tolerances of the oil, drain intervals are less on a car due to the fact that there is less oil in the engine so it carries impurities by volume similar to that of a modern truck.
My recommendation through experience is as per manufacturers recommended interval for first oil change to allow engine to bed in then no longer than recommended but sooner if you can afford it, just down to personal choice.
When I ran engine developement tests for Mercedes with the new common rail heavy truck engines they ran oil to 500,000km or 300,000 miles with no problems.

A lot to read, hope this helps.

5w-40 is always a fully synthetic, ok basestock quality varies depending on cost but 5w is not achievable with a 100% mineral basestock.
