    Default Spanner and no power

    Well it gets worse. Not only does the car decide to stop starting every couple of months, (spanner light, runs for 2-5 secs then cuts out) but now it has decided to strat running again, the spanner light is permanently on, there is no power and the engine won't rev past 3000rpm even in neutral.

    I'm pretty much out of ideas. It was running fine - plenty of boost and no real lag - up until the point it just cut out a couple of weeks back. I've had the battery out to fully charge so the ECU should have been reset.

    Can an EGR cause this? Or the swirl flap?

    I just need to get this heap working long enough to trade it in for something reliable like a 1974 Lada 1100... And preferably without spending £5 gazillion on parts that aren't really faulty courtesy of the hyper accurate Tech 2....

    Any ideas guys, cos i'm stumped...

    well, the spannerlight is saying 'limp home' mode..so thats why it won't rev over 3,000.. it's just the engine protecting itself..

    i know you don't want to hear this, but it needs tech2 or another code reader so you can identify the fault and clear the limp mode...then it will rev higher again and have more power...

    I was thinking as much, but the last time i had it on tech 2 the ECU, all the intectors and pretty much half the rest of the fuelling system came up defective, after which it ran perfectly for 2 months.

    Reading this forum amongst others i'm really beginning to think the 1.9 is a bit of a dog. Considering it's only been about 3 1/2 years the number of problems is utterly ridiculous. Dodgy GM cr@p. Should fit the Alfa 2.4 20v JTD motor which doesn't suffer half these problems! Anyway, enough griping.

    A question, how does the EGR control bypass of air? Is it a butterfly valve or a poppet valve? Is there a sensor that could be telling the ECU it's stuck open or closed?

    Second question where is the boost pressure sensor? If this is defective would this put the engine into limp and hold the wastegate open?

    Last question is it common for the wastegate solenoid to jam open / closed?

    I had a break in the flexible pipe between the exhaust manifold and EGR and something could have got in to jam stuff in either the EGR or turbo / wastegate systems. I'm wondering of this could have had something to do with this.

    OK, i lied, i have one more question what do all the vacuum pipes on the front of the engine bay do? Does any of the boost / wastegate system rely on vacuum sensor readings via these pipes?

    Lots of questions i know, but if there are answers, it will probably benefit a LOT of people when their cars get to 3-4 yrs old!!
