Have you done anything else to the car? And how old is it?

Yeah I know what you mean about the filter, even made a box for my cone and it still sounded like World War III.

Have you tried injector cleaners and had regular oil changes (including filter)?

Has the mpg droped off suddenly or was it gradual?

just been serviced 20.000 mls it has been gradual maybe the colder weather? i would say cruising at 60 i can get about 48 mpg but i have heavy right foot lol. i do wish i had a diesel but stuck with the 1.8 for a wee while yet. its the only thing thats disapointing me with the car other than that the car is fantastic i was hopping to get it tuned or somthing at some point to increase the bhp but not so sure how or if it makes my mpg worse

tuning will make your mpg worse if you floor it every where but at steady speeds, long distance espechially, you can increase you mpg with more torque.

Try an injector cleaner from halfords, might help and check that they changed your air filter on the service, Vx have a habit of not doing a full job where you can't see it.
