You need a torx e18 socket and an 18mm spanner, jack car up and put axle stand under then lower jack and put under lower arm, then undo one bolt near the rear hub then lower jack and spring should come out if it dont you will have to bar the arm down a bit. Then just reverse the procedure to install the spring.

    Default Replacing Rear Springs.

It states in the manual:- Jack up car (to take pressure off rear spring), remove brake caliper and tie up out of the way (new bolts required when refitting), fit spring compressor and compress spring, remove spring and upper damper ring and lower spring stop. To refit:- replace new top and bottom pads, seat spring correctly and remove compressor. Job done (sorry replace brake caliper (new bolts) and wheels).

You DONT need to remove caliper or a spring compresser thats why you use the jack to release the pressure when removing then to compress it when refitting.

As I said "it states in the manual" as I have not carried out this job myself, but thanks for the information anyway.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but have been trying to remove a rear spring (to remove the helper spring installed by PO) using this method. I assume you can remove the spring without the use of spring compressors. However I was unable to get the spring out, there was still a lot of tension on the spring. Can someone explain the "you will have to bar the arm down" part? (eg do I use a hammer or pry bar and on which part of the arm can you put pressure without damaging)

    Thanks,

    Jaap

Once you have the car supported and the bottom of the damper is disconnected, you can press the suspension arm down with your foot and the spring will fall out, even with spring compressors.

But.....................I would consider leaving them in, Signum's and Vectra's have a habit of wearing the insides of the rear tyres, spring assisters pretty much stop this from happening.

I managed to get 28000 miles out of a rear set of 19's on my last Signum before the insides were not too clever.

Thanks, didn't realize I also had to disconnect the damper. On my vectra tyre wear seems even although they wear in such a pattern that they start to make a lot of noise. Was thinking about getting an alignment done , so seemed like the right time to also get the helper spring out.
