Default Engine not firing first time

Its a 1.9cdti 2004 reg with 120000 on the clock try to start it but doesnt fire up till a few seconds have passed. Any one els have this problem. The spanner symbol with the car appears but goes out after a bit when the car is running. No problem once the car is warm and running but turn over is not as quick compered to a my hdi peugeot 306 on a W reg and has done more miles.

    you didn't exactly wait long

Maybe the glow plugs are on their way out, have they ever been changed? Have you thought of getting the fault codes read at all?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

could be the egr on its way out , i would try glow plugs first tho . easy way to test them put a test lamp to the live on battery and the other end to the exposed end of glow plug once you have pulled wire of and if it lights up test lamp they are ok !

after 120,000 miles they stand a chance of either being coked or burnt on the end as well..

My Votes is for Glow plugs as stated above, I had exactly the same symptons on my 1.9 Cdti.
I swapped them out for an Ngk Set from my local motor factors £8.26 Ea + vat & all's been well since
