Default Am I doing this right?

I've worked out my mpg manually this morning and need to check I've done it right peeps?

I filled up last week nearly to the brim and then immediately zero'd the trip.

I've covered 390 miles, and put in £72 this morning; just over 65.5 litres. 109.9p per litre.

    65.5 litres = 14.4 UK Gallons

    So, I've divided 390 miles by 14.4 gallons = 27.08

27mpg! Is that right, as my trip computer is telling me I'm running at 24mpg currently? In my experience the trip computers are usually optimistic to say the least.

I knew I could trust you VV to jump on a MPG thread.

So I wonder why my trip is so far out?

    AJA,

I would do at least 3-4 estimates taking into account different driving conditions etc.... I'm suprised that your mpg figure is higher than the trip computer.

The method I'd use is below,

    1. Fill up your tank to the brim.
    2. Drive until you are quarter full or under and record the amount of miles completed.
    3. Fill up again, measuring exactly how much you took to fill it up.
    4. Drive until you are quarter full or under.
    5. Fill up again recording exactly how much fuel you used.
    6. Then calculate your car's fuel consumption (see below).

How to calculate your average MPG
    1. Determine the total mileage during the test.
    2. Take the total number of litres you have used and divide by 4.5461 to calculate the total number of gallons used.
3 Divide the mileage by the gallons to find out your total mpg.

No, because the rolling radius is virtually identical.

I'm suprised too, my computer is always optimistic on the mpg, if it says 40 I know I'm getting about 37/38. But at least it's consistently wrong

It is an S80, and they're renowned for electrical grimlins. I'll see what figures I get this week.
