    Default Hatchback roof aerial

The aerial whip on the hatchback sits at about 45 degrees from the vertical, not ideal for good radio reception but I suppose it looks good. Spoke to a mate of mine who's into amateur radio and he said, no matter what you're trying to receive or transmit, a vertical aerial is always best.

So to try his theory out, went to a spot where radio reception was poor. With the standard VX aerial, couldn't get a single station. Then we bodged a whip using an old mobile phone car aerial with a 18" vertical whip. (a "1/4 wave" he called it).

What a difference!! Now I was just outside Harrow, West London, and was now picking up stations in Oxford some 50 miles away. Put standard VX aerial back on, nothing.

The only I've got to do now is to make it look good, not a bodge job, and then some pics. Oh, and when we had no aerial, the NCDC 2013 sat nav still worked which some shows the roof aerial whip is not associated with GPS locator side of things. Indeed, when I've had GPS receivers on boats, the aerial looks like a mushroom.

Bottom line - a vertical aerial works better than an angled one

    Default

And the standard Vectra one works better than the VX220 one, even if it don't look as good.
