Looked at the service book and vauxhall have been using a 5w to 30w oil type i went to a local car parts and the said it requires 10w to 30w which is better and why ? and what do the figures mean

I got the bits for the service on my 1.9 cdti today and the oil is long life 5w30. I have to say I'm not convinced that oil should be left in for 20,000 miles but thats what they say!

Different oil companies have different recommendations. To be honest there isn't really that much difference in 10w30 and 5w30 except in cold climates, the w bit stands for winter. You could use 0w30 if you like, if I remember right the viscosity of 0 is the same as water (when cold) and the 30 is the viscosity (therefore protection) when it's warm, but I would stick with whats recommended by the manufacturers which is why I've got 5w30 HTH

I better get back return it an get the 5w to 30w i did read up about oil a long time ago and knew it wa something to do with its protection. Any way of reducing engine rattle

i use 10/40 and change it every 10k like vx recomended me to do

lol ill just stick with the 5w to 30w change it after every 3000 miles with oil filter den after 6 do the air filter and ever 12 change everything to keep it all in ship shape. Any ideas on how to get rid of all the engine oil out the engine or is that not possible. i do normaly run fresh oil through bout a litre worth b4 replacing the drain nut

Every 3000 ! Im going to change mine every 10,000 and think im being careful.

If your using 5w 30 fully synthectic,then its recommended by vx on an ecoflex service sched to last 30,000 miles but thats a tad high imo,i tend to stick to 10w 40 part synth,and drop every ten grand or one year w e c f,air filter on mine recommended change every 20 grand,so i think you'd be over doing it a bit,engine flush below.

cheers for the info peeps probably 3000 is over doing it so will probably end up doing it after every 10,000 and save a few bob

If you use 10/40 then it's 8-10k

If you use 5/30 then it's 12-16k

It's your choice, 3k oil changes is just plain financially silly unless you get it free,

For your car you need 5/30, officially it will run for 20k + but thats pushin it imo.
