Talking shockingly cheeky !! busted springs!!

hi came out of work this afternnon, to hear a strange loose bolt rattling noise from the front end, after examining on jack when i got home, was presented with the bottom 3 inches of the offside spring sat in the cup of the shock!!

after having rung vx in worcester, and quoted 110 squid for the 2 springs! decided to order a set of bilstein shocks and jamex uprated springs from lmf !!

but was wondering how much of a job it is to do, doesnt actually look like the end of the world according to the workshop disc I have, (but as I have not done front struts before wasnt sure??)

or is anyone localish that would help/do, obviously for a donation !!

    Default Front Shockers and Springs

    Hi,

Just had exactly the same problem, apparently it's common.

Took me about 4.5 hours to take off front two strut's, break them down, clean and grease the top bearings, assemble two all new strut's and I also replaced the brake pads and disc while I was there.

Doing the break pads and disc's wasn't anything to do with the spring snapping, I just needed to do them. In fact it was when I started to do the brakes that I noticed the spring had snapped.

Wierd how the car doesn't feel too bad to drive isn't it!

I had to borrow some spring compressors to do the job. Thankfully I have a few friends in the trade. But if your kit comes ready assembled and your not doing the brakes, should take no more than an hour to an hour and a half. Add another 60/90 minutes if you have to break down the old units to get the shocker tops and then assemble your new kit.

Make sure you get the tracking checked again afterwards (mine was still spot on, but this is not always the case), also get it checked again after 1k miles as the springs settle.

has anyone tried writing to vosa or vauxhall, this has to be a recall with the amount of springs that are failing.

They told me that there is a new and improved shocker with "improved rust protection". My car's an '04 model and they were concerned because around my chassis number as well as there being a choice of standard and sports there was a a possibility of a part number that had been superseded with this new "improved rust protected" strut. When they rang the factory for me they confirmed that there was only one part number for my GSi and it had not been superseded.

So I guess that while mine stayed the same, there must have been some sort of problem investigated on some models to do with rust.

Not sure if rust had anything to do with my spring giving up. Personally I put it down to cheap metal. But I suppose cheap metal could allow some sort of corrosion from the inside, maybe just enough to weaken the structure. But it didn't look too rusty from the outside. Who knows!

My new struts have the same part numbers as the originals on the car. Not sure about the springs because there was no readable markings on them. Other than some coloured dots, but they denote the year of manufacture. Old ones had blue and white dots, new ones have yellow dots.

For reference my part numbers were :-

    V0093174103 OS FRONT STRUT
    """"""""""""""""2 NS FRONT STRUT
    V0093190523 FRONT SPRING SET

    £321.95 in total (not fitted)

I saw cheaper and dearer, just went for what I was happy with. It's lifted the car slightly, but the car had done 86k on the old ones, and not forgetting one was snapped. Rears next....

very comon fault, mine had both snapped on 52 plate SRi between 50-57k miles.

There is a blue rubber/plastic sleeve you need to buy with the springs if you go for Vauxhall items that slides over the bottom of the spring for about the first 6".

Only problem I had was removing the top strut nut, you need a thin deep ring spanner or similar to clear the torx bit.

Springs can knock for a few miles over bumps until it settles into place.

Genuine springs are about £90 with discount from Vaux.
