Default True or false regarding new engines?

Hiya...
I', gettin my vectra 2.0 turbo tomorrow and since this is my first brandnew car... I have a question.....
I've always heard alot bout having to take the first 1000 km's slow untill the engine is used to the heat n pressure.
But on the other hand I've heard alot of people say that it isnt an issue anymore thanks to new technology, testing, materials and what not...

So any oppinions on this? Before i go wreck my new engine..

Drive it like you stole it!! Never ever had a problem with any car like this.

Although I always have a wee oil change after 1000 miles, other than that drive as normal.

Not really sure with the vectra, but when i got my subaru impreza sti out the wrapper,i was imformed that for the first 1000 miles that i was to break it in gently not above 4000 rpm mixed driving due to the ultra thin oil, then once the 1000 mile service was done it was all hammer and tongs!

Not generally an issue these days. The VX manual does state that for the first 1000 kilometres do not exceed 75% of the total output of the engine, which in the case of the 2.0T is 75% of 143 mph, in top speed terms,so unless you are an utter raving lunatic speed freak, you won't have a problem there.

It also advises against too much unnecessarily harsh acceleration during the same period, particularly in the lower gears. A modicum of common sense is all that's needed. I seem to remember reading somewhere that continually over revving the engine very early in a car's life can do far more damage than doing so after the engine has bedded in.

Personally I think you would probably do more damage to the gearbox oil by thrashing it from new than you will do to the engine.

Remember, you change the engine oil regularly, the gearbox though, never!.

There are a lot of sharp edges on all those teeth which just love to shear the long chain molecules.

Once the gearbox has worn in a little, the oil is better at seperating the contact points of the teeth.

I once fitted a remanufactured gearbox to my CavMkII and drove it like I always did! for about a hundered miles. Boy did that gearbox get toasty!, may well have damaged the oils properties. Changed it and took it easy for the next 1000 or so. Ran cool and bedded in nicely.
Then proceeded to be thrashed. Never got as hot as the first thrashing.

Hope this helps.
