    Default metal sound under car

hi i have come across what i can only described as a metal to metal vibration under the front of the car which sounds like its coming just in front of the front doors. it only happens when the car is in low revs such as pulling off so about 1500 to 2000 rpm. could it be the cat inside breaking up? are there any other signs fot the cat failing i should look for? thanks

hi no i am going to do that tommorow. what made me think it was the cat was ive had a very poor petrol consumption and everything else has been checked by the main stealers!! i know its a 3.2 but i used to get around 27mpg now its about 22 on the same run. ive also been told if its the cat when the bits break up inside thats the kind of noise you get but i could be wrong!!!

shouldn't worry.. this cold weather has killed our consumption figures too....

when it's up in the air you'll be able to hear where the vibrations are coming from..put a leather glove on and you'll be able to hold the pipe and see if you can stop it rattling as well..

if the cat is shot, get a sportscat..much much cheaper than a genuine item..

I have a similar noise on my mine when i'm pulling away hard. The only thing I could see that was obviously is the heat shields on the bottom of the spare wheel well have rusted through the mounts because it's just a cheapy bit of thin metal.

When I get on to it i'm just going to undo the bolts and put some big washers on to hold the heat shields back up.

I had that problem on my 1.8 and it turned out to be the heat shield which is around about underneath the gear lever or handbrake area - it had actually fallen off the car and got wedged over the exhaust. The AA put it back on as i was 200 miles from home - its made of a very thin and bendy metal - hopefully thats waht it is as the CAt sounds expensive mate.
