    Default a good headunit IMO...

i've grown tired enough of the factory headunit to think about getting rid of it. the major issue that i've had with changing the headunit is that i'll most likely lose the steering wheel controls, which i've grown quite attached to!

but still, my mp3 player has been gathering dust and making cd's is becoming a real pain.

i've seen a headunit advertised in Aldi the supermarket. It's only 50 quid but is packed with really useful features.

These features are specifically directed towards the mp3 market. For instance, the headunit comes with a 50 cm wire that connects to the face of he headunit and then into a mp3 player,cd player, etc. The end that connects to the headunit is a mini-usb type and the end that goes into the palyer is probably a 3.5mm jack, or possibly even a mini-usb connection again. I think it is probably the later because otherwise they would've just put a 3.5mm jack connection on the front of the h/unit aswell.

Quality of playback should be good - with 4 x 40w it's not too shabby. All the usual RDS features, am/fm radio. also has RCA and ISO connectors.

And for those who don't want to invest in an mp3 player it also has an sd/mmc card slot so that you can store your mp3's on there and play them in the car.

as i said, for 50 quid you can't really go wrong.

has anyone ever used an infra red system to control the h/unit from the factory steering controls?? i know it can be done because my brother fitted it into a 206. It was only a wire going from the steering wheel and poking towards the IR eye on the h/unit. But what with this be a non-mainstream h/unit manufacturer do you think i'll be able to find a suitable solution?

besides the steering control issues, will i come across any other problems i.e. permanent power to the headunit once i change it over. who was it that bought the connectors that drew power from the cigar lighter?

for those who are interested, the h/unit is going to be instores today.

i'll most likely be buying one for myself and one for the g/friend. so if anyone is interested then i can take pics and what not. installation on christmas eve???....i think so!!!

    apologies for the novel-like post.

cheers for any info in advance.

    Default

hi mate. i just fitted a pioneer unit recently and its not compatible with steering controls but does come with an infra-red control which straps to the wheel. works well. my mate bought a mp3 head unit from asda a ministry of sound one but he said there was a catch with the usb port. wasnt as simple as he thought and didnt do what he thought. i'll need to ask him again though as i wasa wee bit drunk when he was telling me

Sounds like an ok deal though.
