    Default Butchers and Markets

Last week I made the decision to start buying my meat and veg from local butchers and markets.

I walked into the butchers with £40, I bought 500g of Mince, 500g of Bacon, 2 chicken breasts, 1 stirloin steak and 2 box's of large free ranged eggs, £17.86

Then I walked to the market, Bought bunch of carrots, some large shrooms, 2 garlic, 1 lemon, 1 mango, 1 onion, 1 coliflour and brockley.

And I still had £14 change after it all.

I was suprised how helpful the butcher was, placed everything on the scales so I could see the weights to the quantity, was great, Not worked out if it's cheaper or how much more it is, but I'll definatly be doing it again.

Anyone else out there do this or still stuck in the supermarkets?

In the last few months we have been buying from the local butcher, meat has so much more flavour than the supermarket stuff, still buy veg from supermarket though, not much of a difference imo and also buying free range chicken as the missus saw that program on channel 4........

Not really counted the cost as such, just know free range is twice sometimes three times more expensive......

I work for asda so not really got a choice, unless the butcher matches my discount. But the bloke at the car boot will do 12 chickens, %lb of steak, a beef joint and 8 packs of bacon for £15 . People reckon the chickens have 3 legs but i'll eat owt

There's an old joke to that one....

A man driving down a lane is all of a sudden overtaken by a 3 legged chicken..

He follows it as it veers off into a farm yard

The man then asks the farmer about the 3 legged chicken

The farmer tells him he breeds lots of them

How do they taste asks the man

I dunno I've never managed to catch one yet replies the farmer.

Thanks for the support Ed, I know it's not my best effort and I did say it was old, I blame it on too much interaction with our Eastbourne Joke Factory, I read one of his yesterday and groaned, obviously the bad joke flu has infiltrated my body and I could now face 4 days of .... why did the chicken cross the road etc... before I get back to normal.

I love the Butchers, got one in the village that cuts and ties all the meat you want. I love it when you ask for a cut and then watch him get a carcas out and butcher it there in front of you, how fresh can you get?

Butchers for me - 1) support the local businesses 2) more flavour 3) they'll always get something out for you from the store if you don't like the look of what is on display - I always get picky about the fore-rib.... 4) the price premium is worth it 5) they will always prepare something if you ask them 6) their sausage meat leaves no dripping fat when making sausage rolls, unlike the supermarket stuff - even finest or extra special 7) the meat is locally reared, supplied and slaughtered 8) Their sausages win prizes. Kerridges of Nayland - give them a whirl if you live locally. Colemans of Boxted are good as well and do the local markets

Veg - I was stunned when I found that the local fresh veg from Assington farm shop and soon to be ex post office was cheaper than Tesco's, so a bit of each really as Tesco have the variety.

as it is i do all the cooking in our house and as such do most of the food shopping,in the past i would have done the entire shopping at Asda or Morrisons but now thats down to about 50% of the shopping which is non-food.
for the last say 3 years ive been going to the farm shop for most of my food shop a bit lucky around ere as we have 4 or 5 good shops with lots on offer but a good few pence more that the supermarkets but way better quality,
for my fish i go to Barnsley market as it is one of the best fish markets around.
