    Default Alarm Noise?

Last night my 1.9 CDTI Vec seemed to make a strange noise. A sort of beep-beep-beep noise that stopped after around 15-20 seconds. Sounded a bit like an oven timer! (it definitely wasn't our oven timer!! )

Could it be the alarm? I understand the alarm siren uses the horn and it definitely wasn't the horn.

It did this twice during the night and woke me up! I didn't even realise I had an alarm on the car until a couple of weeks ago so I'm not even sure what it will sound like when it goes off for real!

Nope. The alarm has it's own siren which is located right next tot the fuse box in the boot.

As for the beeps, generally that's a sign that the back up batteries in the unit are failing.

That makes sense, it didn't sound like the alarm sounding - are these batteries replaceable then?

If they are its £££ time I bet.

Can the alarm be disabled completely anyway? Not much use these days anyway.

Same thing happened on my Astra G and I was told that as they are sealed units the battery can't be replaced - otherwise Tealeaf Terry could just remove the battery to disable the siren. I'd imagine the siren on the Vec is just the same. A new siren is around £100 odd.

Not sure, If it was it'd be through Tech 2, Since not every spec came with an alarm, I'd imagine there is the option there to tell the car it hasn't got a siren (and remove it), but leave the immobiliser functioning.

    Argh! £100 for a noise!

Daft really, if someones got into the boot its pretty irrelevant that they can disable the alarm, they're in anyway!

Will have a look in the boot tonight and see if I can see it - near the rear fusebox? Never looked in there yet!

Its only a 54 plate, batteries didn't last very long did they? My house alarm siren backup lasted 10 years before it conked out, and they only cost a tenner to replace.

If I leave it and the siren unit dies, I assume I'll get an error logged?

Just rang the local Vx dealer - they said this isn't a known fault and the factory fitted alarm doesn't do that!

And then offered me a diagnostic for £75.....

Now I'm confused. I bought the car second hand from a company who ran it while it was under warranty. As far as I know its a bog standard LS/Life model, the only extra fitted was a Nokia phone kit!

Does it have a button on the dash (RH side of the stereo) to disable the ultrasonic sensors? This button also has aflashing LED in it when the car is locked up.

From memory, just disconnecting the alarm power sounder will set off the alarm as it will think someone is tampering with it. Which in effect will be what you'll be doing. On the old Astra-G's and the like, if you turn the ignition on prior to disconnecting the power sounder, then it won't go off as the system realises that if you've got the key in the ignition then you must be an authorised person. However, the Astra-G doesn't have the CANBUS system controlling the electrics; but your Vectra does.

Yep, but if it's Tech 2'd first to tell the car that it hasn't got an alarm, then it could be disconnected.

Or, as you say, press the ultrasonics button each time the car is locked to make sure it won't go off - although more of a PITA and can be forgotten to do.

But pressing the ultrasonics button will only stop the interior sensors from working. The alarm will still be armed and liable to go off if the back up batteries have had it.
