    Default Automatic Gearbox Slack

Just got a 2.2 diesel Vectra a couple of weeks ago. It is an 03 Elegance.
I have always driven Automatics this feels great at high speeds / normal acceleration but when crawling in heavy traffic it feels hesitent and once hot the drivetrain feels slack, ie if you take your foot off throttle then accelarate
It like I would imagine it to be if say an engine mount had worn allowing the engine to rock.
Very hard to explain but hope you get my drift, so question to other automatic drivers is this drive train slack normal ?

Many thanks for any help or advice.

    Best regards

    Russell.

Perhaps a tuning box to get it all running like clockwork and giving you some fantastic MPG could be the answer?

And welcome to the site by the way.

I think Russell may want to get his gearbox sorted out before he starts to put more power through it!?? You must be getting paid for plugging those boxes!?

Not sure about the diesel autos (is yours one of the new 6 speeders?), but my current V6 petrol is just like all the other Vx autos I've had since about 1990 - i.e. very smooth. I think I'm right in saying that the 5 speed autos have a torque convertor lock-up in 4th and 5th gears so that there is minimal slippage (less than 2% I believe). This feature makes them feel more like a manual transmission in the higher gears and helps the fuel economy. However, it can also make the box 'lurch' slightly when the lock up engages if you are accelerating very gently and it cuts in at around 30mph. In the lower ratios, generally the 'box should be very smooth and feel quite 'fluid' - if that makes any sense.

As a rule of thumb, if it doesn't feel smooth then it's probably worth a quick check with a Tech2 as there are far too many variables on a modern engine/auto combination to make any kind of 'by guess and by gosh' diagnosis.

It doesn't sound like yours has the leaky heat exchanger problem as I think this only affected the V6's. A faulty heat exchanger (inside the gearbox) can allow coolant to leak into the transmission. This leads to really 'thumpy' gearshifts and needs a new gearbox to fix (under warranty). As far as I know, this has only affected cars in Germany where their much higher autobahn speeds require the gearbox to dissipate more heat.
