Default Netgear

Quite happily surfing the net on Thursday evening and what do you know, lose connection, looked at the Netgear Wireless Router and BB light was flashing orange, so unplugged it plugged it back in and guess what.........DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Not a sausage!!!!!!!!!!!! tried a different adapter at work (just in case) but nothing, so hastily bought a buffalo wireless router from Tesco, which while ok I don't feel is as good as the Netgear, so question is.................

Should I go for the one I had DG834GT or is worth upgrading to the DG834N.

I use net for music, surfing email, X box, PSP, and Mum's PC is conencted to wireless as well.

Or should I just stick with the Tesco Buffalo WBMR54G job??

I'm not familiar with the specific Buffalo router, but they make other good quality kit - like Network drives etc. (I have a TeraStation and it's been reliable). I know that a company can maybe excel in one type of product, and be merely okay in another - but Buffalo have a good overall name is what I was basically saying.

As you've already bought it, you probably may as well keep using it to see how you fare with it, before shelling out for another router only to find it's not any better then the Buffalo one.

I'm sure somebody familiar with that specific router will be along to give an opinion on it.

i replied on vs but will reply here too as it might be usefull to someone:

the buffalo and the netgear are both 54G so should be the same speed.
wireless range may be a different matter.

give it a go, if you don't feel comfortable then go get another netgear and "stick with what you know"

i could recommend all sorts but it depends on your budget.
i've just picked up a tasty little Draytek for <£50 off fleabay.

with the netgear dg834n you may find you also need N equipped rangemax usb adaptors, laptop mini pci cards etc to benefit from the newer N router..

I had a netgear dg834gt router and it was 108 not 54g, even the sky router we had which is a rebranded netgear dg834g was 108.. there has been a lot of different dg834 routers ..

I may have a spare dg834gt somewhere, if i can find it you are more than welcome to it, i dont think i have the psu though, because my brother borrowed it and as normal it hasn't returned, but hopefully you will have a psu already..

just found the sky router we had, if anyone needs it let me know otherwise i'll bin it...

edit sky router is 54g, hence model number gd834g not the 108 version which is dg834gt...

We had the dg834n a year ago, wasn't sure if it was the N or Pre N that we had.. and without the N equiped adaptors for pc's and laptops we didnt notice a lot of difference in speed..
the dg834gt is the superg in green.. depends what your going to use it for, if just surfing with a laptop then i'd stick with the dg834gt 108 superG.. the dg834n is the one with the highlight around it which is purple'ish...

OMG, Netgear, the biggest drop out in the class, the Buffalo one is better by a mile, buy anything but a netgear, when I had one *for a day* it couldn't send a signal from the front to the back of my house, Netver again, just incase you want to consider I have a Belkin one now, much much better.

I can only go what I experienced Pete, and for £80 it was really poor, never got out of the yellow bars.
