    Default Help and advice please

Started my car earlier and as it fired up there was a loud bang / thud noise from the engine. The car started so left it running and had a look under the bonnet, nothing was amiss.

Then drove down the road and the spanner and battery light came on, also the water temp gauge was rising alot further towards hot than it does normally.

Ive had alook in the VX handbook and says alternator not charging the battery and also engine coolant may not be operating.

So : Is it the alternator, or has the alternator belt snapped if it has one?

If the belt has snapped is it an easy fix?

    Please help.

DTi... bottom pulley will have delaminated..100% sure

this will mean no drive to the alternator and waterpump..the bits are around £220 for the pulley and £14 for the bolt.. it's very very tight to undo so it's a garage job only really....

These suffer from the tensioner on the drivebelt letting the bolt loose off, so check that 1st, as you look in at the engine on the left side you should see it around the head level.

Is the belt still on?..if you look at the bottom pulley has it still got it's multigrooved outer on it? or has it come off and you're left with a smaller inner one?..

Right, been out to car and the worst. Bottom pulley has come off and lying on the frame work. Is this a common known fault and does vx put anything towards the cost.

It's a common fault and if the car's out of warranty, I'd say Vauxhall won't be interested.

And just to really kick you in the nads, the parts probably still on backorder at the moment. You may luck in with a dealer who has one in stock, or maybe e-bay.

Tam had problems with his, might be worth dropping him a line to see how he got hold of his.

Is the pulley still in one piece? if it is you should just need new bolts, use the correct ones from VX and apply some Loc tight to the threads if there isn't any coloured stuff on them already, screw it back on and then come ask which way the belt goes back on, it's a trick one, it runs how you'd least expect, I'd like to tell you which way but i don't have a picture of it in situ or the memory of how it goes on, but at one point the top smooth edge runs back along itself like a sandwich. hth.

Ask Mark for help if you can diy.
