Vehicle : Insignia CDTi SRi NAV 160

    Trim : SRi

    Engine : A20DTH

    Year : 2009

    Mileage : 88000

Default BHP whats it all about then?????

Well I was doing a bit of internet research looking up specs of cars and I came across the following facts:

1.8XE engine BHP 122 (my car)

    1.8VV engine BHP 140

An increase of 18 BHP gave a new 0-60 time of............................

    Wait for it.............................

0.6 secs faster then the old engine, so is it worth it?

What increase have you guys got compared to standard times and modded?

Is BHP all its made up to be and is it worth all the expensive trying to increase it to get an extra 0.6 sec increase in 0-60?

So lets get the thread started then!!!

In a word, no! You want a fast car, buy a fast car. That said, for those with turbochargers a simple remap improves driveability, by giving you more torque where you want it. Also, for those who have spent thousands on (non performance) mods spending lots to get a bit more power is a better prospect than spending a little on a faster carbut losing their "investment" on mods.

It's not just about the peak bhp figures, it's what power, and torque, increases you get through the range. Some people, not saying you were, get hung up on pek bhp figures, and that's al lthey are - peak figures. You can have two identical cars, just with different maps/tuning/bozes or whatever, and one has less bhp than the other. People assume the car with the higher bhp is faster - not necessarily. The higher bhp one may only hold that for a shoert time and then tail off quickly. The other car could have less bhp, but more torque, so it can hold that power over far more of the rev range and therefore deliver more power consistently to the wheels, and that car will bw quicker on the road.

A good example is the Vectra VXR. The EDS and BSR maps increase it from 280 to 300bhp A lot of people would think, what's the point for only 20bhp more, but the torque curve is also sizeably increased and flatter - so there is a increase of torque and power across the rev range, allowing for better (quicker) overtaking and improves the whole driveability of the car.

Is it worth it for that extra 0.6 (or whatever) on 0-60 - no, but for me that's not why I've done what I've done. I did it to increase the whole mid-range performance and through the gears performance, not for a faster time off the line (which to me is simply an additional result of having the remap). 0-60 in the real world is mostly pointless and doesn't give a true indication of the cars performance on the road.
