    Default Diesel Pump Failure Rates

I would like to get some data on the failure rate of diesel injection pumps on Vectra C's.

If your pump has failed please select one of the options from the poll list at the appropriate mileage.

    Thanks
    Keith

You should have specified engine (2.0, 2.2, 1.9 120, 1.9 150, 3.0 preface and 3.0 facelift). This would then indicate which are the problem engines.

how many people get told by a garage that they need a new pump when actually they dont , i have been twice .
The fault turned out to be air in the pump caused by some sort of split pipe ,
i was told £1600 and it cost me £80 including scanner time clearing the fault codes
just be warned get a 2nd opinion

a pump doesnt fail unless it has done very high milage

First of all sorry about the length of this posting but I thought I would share some of my knowledge with you guys….

Ok, I posted this poll as I have a Vectra C 2.0 DTI SXI (Y20DTH) with 100100 miles on the clock. There's no signs of the pump dying as yet (well I hope not!!)

I have taken some pre emptive measures with it already, I have fitted a non return valve on the diesel pipe from the filter to the input feed of the pump (to stop any leak back issues) I also add Millers sport 4 diesel additive to the tank when I fill up. Don’t know if this stuff works but worth a go, a damn sight cheaper than buying a new pump and having it fitted / programmed...

I had a Vectra B DTI (X20 DTL) quite a few years back with 115000 miles on the clock. It would not start in the mornings, so I used to sit there and crank it until it started.

This is how I learned about leak back, I also discovered that if you crank the engine whilst there is no diesel going through it will do a bit of damage each time. This is because the pump uses the diesel as lubrication as it passes through the pistons of the pump etc. The pump can’t compress air too well but eventually drags enough through to seduce the diesel from the filter reservoir.

This happened numerous times and eventually the pump died. I sourced a replacement pump and fitted it, I also changed the leak off pipes, injector fire seals and fitted a non return valve to the supply line. Whilst fitting it I stripped the fuel system down, I found loads small pieces of what looked like brass filings in the bottom of the fuel filter housing, this was the internal workings of the pump that had broken down!

With all this done the car started like a dream every time, first time! And the beauty of the X20 DTL engine was that you didn’t have to re-program the pump ECU to the car. It just bolted on and worked.

I also had the chance to buy another injection pump at a bargain price a few months later, so I bought it as a spare just in case. All was going well for about a year after this and then the car was written off in a crash!! I sold the spare pump on ebay….

This is why I am curious to get an insight to the average mileage of failure on the C.

    Thanks
    Keith

Keithtinman....I have a 2.0 DTI (2003, 60k) and the cost of replacing the fuel pump does scare me. I have been using Millers Sport 4 and always use Shell Extra, but could you enlighten me about this "non return valve on the diesel pipe from the filter to the input feed of the pump". Where would I get one and how would I fit it. Thanks in advance

Collecting my car (Signum V6CDTI) from the dealers today £1500+ (Vauxhall are paying half as less than a month out of warranty). The car has only done 53,000 miles - I'm gutted of course.

The garage did look for leaks in the system before contacting Vauxhall Technical for advice on problem.

I've only ever had one diesel fuel pump fail
It was a Lucas unit in a PSA TUD3 engine
The main bearing failed at about 110K miles but lasted a further 6K miles before it ceased and had to be removed from the engine
Peugeot wanted £750 to replace with refurbished unit
Thankfully I had a Lucas agent nearby, and they refurbished the existing unit for £200
I then sold that car a few months later

Had 3 1.9 CDTi 150's and never had a problem in 150000 miles between them.
