Gunson 4142 dwell angle connections - HELP

Anyone know what connections need to be made to the coil, earth, power etc etc to measure the dwell angle on my other car (V8 engine)?

My mate has leant me his multimeter with this function, as mine doesn't have it.

Before anyone states the obvious, it isn't for my Vec


I've already set the points with a feeler blade and got the timing right, engine runs OK, but just want to check via measuring dwell to be doubly sure.


He can't find the instructions, and I don't want to blow up his kit.....

The red lead goes to the points side of the coil (negative terminal) and the black clamps onto any good ground point on the engine.

I wish my other car had a V8 engine.....mine is a MK 4 spitfire

I assume 4 sets of carbs to nicely balance

No, just twin 1 3/4" SU carbs.


I do like the Spitfire though, but only having 2 seats isn't really practical for us..

Why did I mention practicality ? ? ? Since when has a V8 been practical these days??

Good old SU's 1 1/4" in the 1.3 Spit - Good old hose pipe to set the hiss right for the balance...lol

Hose pipe hiss, lol.

Best way is to have a tap in at each carb, connect rubber tube to a 'U' half filled with water and when each are balanced, the water level should be equal in each side of the 'U'.

OR, get a Digital Delta Pressure sensor to set them up evenly....

But the hiss from a hose pipe works too, just a bit agricultural.

Just to complete this.

I connected the black to earth and the red to the points side of the coil, and with the engine running the meter showed the dwell angle.

The book says 26-28°, so being anal I adjusted it to 27° via the adjustment screw on the side of the dizzy. When first connected it showed a dwell of 20°, and as I adjusted it, the engine tone and running improved surprisingly.
