steering column

I have a knocking noise coming from the steering column, any ideas?? Vectra c 1.9 cdti 56 plate

bearing or universal joint...best to get it checked out asap

Many Thanks for that reply, just one more thing, since I've had the vehicle I've noticed the steering very light and general play with steering wheel, could this linked to my current problem.

general play could well be linked..you can check the freeplay in the system by gentley rocking the steering wheel back and forth trying to see when the edge of the tyre starts to move..really you should have no more than 5-10mm at the rim of the steering wheel..less ideally..

Light steering is usually tyre pressures or the pump assistance...

as before, really needs a proper look at

Thanks again, I'm just waiting for a reply from my local dealer to see when they can look at it. Will keep you posted. This is my first time on the site and it's excellent, been reading many interesting comments on past problems with this problem of noise in the steering column, somebody mentioned a splined drive or something similar, anyway should be fun explaining all this to the receptionist.
