Default A question that's bothered me...

A friend has had his car stolen recently and it had a private plate on it.
    We were talking this morning and this question has arisen;
If your car has personalised plates on it, is stolen and not recovered, do you lose the right to those numberplates?

    Answers please.

I wouldn't have thought so. I'd think you can just inform DVLA that the car has been stolen and you get the plate transferred to your new car - just the same as if you'd bought a new car.

The physical number plates are not the entitlement to ownership.

The entitlement to ownership is all the paperwork he has at home.

Just get them transferred as Duncan said using the paperwork he already has.

DVLA Info from form V317 - Transferring a Vehicle Registration Number >>>

My Vehicle has been stolen, can I still apply to transfer its number?

You can apply to transfer the number ONLY if the vehicle has been recorded as stolen at the DVLA in Swansea for at least one year.

For further information contact the Cherished Transfer Section, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BW

He's just had the same answer, one year and one day to allow police to "do their investigations" Oh what a laugh that is, they investigate a stolen car??? No offence to those on here, natch, but really, come on!

Its also a nightmare if a car gets written off by an insurance company (and therefore crushed) before the plate is transferred, can take months to sort.

I'd query that. We often get alerts on ANPR of stolen cars that turn out to be new vehicles to which the plate has been transferred.

And it's often been well within a year.

Thing that annoys me is that you actually don't own the private plate, merely the right to use it (which can be revoked whenever).

I had the bother when an insurance company wrote a car off of mine without telling me before hand. Plate had a scrap mark on it and took months of arguing to get it back.

Just done the same with mine Pete.

I'm waiting for the retention documents now, so I can start the paperwork for the new car
