play in wheels

hi all newish to site,i have a vectra 2.0t and thers a bit of play in the wheels,when going over bumps in road the wheel will pull left or right,spilt the ball joint and trackrod end seems fine the plays in the bar,you can change the bar from trackrod end to steering rack but would that cure anything or is it a rack i need,a guy from kwik fit with a 1.8 vectra c said his was same and that changing the bar cured it but not to sure about that,would appreciate any replys thanks

Yes, From your description, I paid £9.36 Ea for them from my friendly motor factors. Quinton Hazell Part No: QR3298S Rack End. This was on a CDTI 54 Plate.

Hi.

Not to bad of a Job.

Put car on Axle stands ( Car lift is much better, Only wish i had one )
Remove road Wheels
Undo the locking nuts on your track rods (Steering rack)
Remove the track rod from the Hub assy.

You can either wind the track rods off now counting turns to get a rough gestimate of where they came from on the rack or wind them off on the work bench once the rack inner assy has been removed.

Snip the ties on the steering rack gaitors & slide down to gain access to the rack inners, With a good fitting spanner un-wind the rack inner.

Rebuild the opposite way not forgetting to apply & insert some Cv Joint grease around the rack inners & in the rack gaitors.

You may also find it easier to move the steering from one side to the other for better access Etc.

Get the car's tracking Set.

Once you have seen the replacement parts, All will make sense

Do you know what size the spanner should be for un-winding the rack inner?

Typical, I have thrown the old inners away, Else i could of told you for definate,
From memory, I used an english sized spanner as it was a better fit, But i have two sizes in mind was it 13/16th's or 7/8th's .

Can you not measure your new ones ??

Just measured them and it's 36mm but you say an english spanner so thats 1 7/16th I think.
