    Default Play in steering

Just swapped my pre-facelift estate for a post-facelift one and there's something odd about the steering.

It's perfectly fine around town but at motorway speeds there's a small amount of (completely) free play before you feel any resistance. It doesn't feel like traditional mechanical free play if you see what I mean - it's almost like what you get on a gaming console wheel. The actual process of steering is fine - the car is tracking well and it's not pulling in any way.

I happened to be passing a Vx dealer so took it in, and (credit to them) they put it on a ramp there and then and checked it all out (including tech2) and there's nothing untoward mechanically. Track rod ends are fine, etc.

Is this a characteristic of the facelift models? Did they change the steering mechanism? Is it speed sensitive?

Just realised this ought to have gone in the Technical Section.

    Sorry.

Jack one of the front wheels up & pull & push on the tyre (Side to side) There should be minimal play !!!

If there is a considerable ammount You have a few places to check, Track Rod ends, Track Rod Inners (Quite Common), Steering Rack & the Universal Joint on the Steering column.

My money's on Track rod inners

My 07 plate facelift is exactly the same as you described. It must be the way the car is built. i was planning in getting it checked out after I noticed the play on the motorway when driving in a straight line. I think its just the way the steering wheel is mounted as i can feel it when the car is stationary.

I asked the dealer to have another look at mine.

It turned out that one of the bolts in the universal joint had either not been done up properly or had worked loose. Easily fixed and the steering's back to normal now.

Hi, Had mine in the Stealers a couple of weeks ago under Warranty. They Changed O/S track rod end. This failed to resolve it !.. Took car back and did some moaning, Finally they found a loose bolt in the U/J somewhere, tightened it up and now Car is fine.
