Just built a new PC to replace my old system.
The old one was an Athlon XP3000, 1Gb DDR400 RAM on a Gigabyte Ga7N400L motherboard with a Geforce 6800 128Mb card all running under XP-SP2.
To be fair to it, even though it was getting on a bit, it played the latest games pretty well albeit at only 1024x768 for best performance.
New system is an Intel E6300 C2D CPU, overclocked to @3.2Ghz with 2Gb Geil Ultra Low Latency DDR2 6400 RAM sat on an ASUS P5K motherboard ( ***** to set up and install Vista on, but running sweet now ) and coupled up to that lot is an ATI X1900XTX 512Mb GPU. All running under Vista Ultimate.
I decided I could do with a higher spec system not because I wanted to play games on it but because I'm using it more for part time work now on the web design front and it was chugging a bit when I had say - Dreamweaver CS3, Photoshop CS3 and Flash or Fireworks all open at the same time and switching between them.
But last night I decided to take a wee break ( had been working on a new site all afternoon ) and thought "Hmmm....wonder what games are like on this thing now??".
So I dug out Bio Shock and reinstalled that. Had never got around to finishing it the first time on the old system.
Fired it up after installing and started playing.........
Amazing. The graphics are incredible. Gameplay is smooth as silk and loading times are awesome!!!.
So I got a bit carried away and reinstalled Stalker.
Same again....!!!!. Can't believe the difference compared to before and this is all running on a system that isn't exactly cutting edge by todays standards!!!.
All in all, a good result. Mrs Ecosse was seriously peed off at me for splashing out on new bits for the PC, but I countered that by saying "But its for my work you know".
Then she caught me playing Bio Shock last night....lol.
So back to PC gaming for me for a bit, 360 was getting a bit boring.
Going to try Crysis next.
