Mr.Clutch question...

I have a Mr.Clutch question - would you use them for a clutch replacement over (say) a main dealer or a competent independent garage? The clutch on my father-in-law's Astra is slipping, and I won't touch it with a barge pole - and the main dealer is well expensive. I got a quote from Mr.Clutch for £450 incl everything, which I thought was quite good. Maybe.

Call it the Kwik Fit syndrome (i.e. potential for rip-off), but I'm reluctant to book it in.

Anyone got any experiences (either way)?

A few years ago a friend of mine had a Renault 19 16v and the clutch went. Garages were talking 700 quid to fix it, Mr Clutch i Luton did it for £290, and the car was fine for the rest of the time he owned it(about 18mths)

they do them every day..and on cost alone are better than a main dealer..( lower labour rates)

£450 sounds high to me. But then again, I wouldn't pay anyone to do it. I'd do it myself.

If only they were the same as Astra's of old, you could do a clutch change in 20 minutes without removing the gearbox.

did mine in a car a few years ago and it was fine for the following 2 year i had the car and as far as i know its still the same clutch in the car now..

there cheaper due to them remaking the clutch themself saving you money

I would dare say that the majority of the expense is labour, with part cost fairly low relative to total job cost.

I changed the release bearing in my old Vec B and it was a pain in the posterior, as it was lengthy and boring to do... not too difficult, just boring
