    Default vodafone charges

Just checked my vodafone bill and noticed that the boogers are charging me for connecting to the internet via my BT wifi connection. Hang on, it's a wifi connection, not a gprs connection and nothing to do with vodafone - right?

So I call them up and the chap sez, 'yeah it's 'cos you're using our sim card' - is that right?? If I connect via gprs then let them charge me, but to charge me for connecting to a wifi.... is this common knowledge or is vodafone pulling the wool over my eyes?

You're meaning at home and on a phone I take it?

I know on the Vodafone 3G data cards on laptops it's a bit like that i.e. if you use the data card, with the SIM card in it, to connect to a Wi-Fi network like BT Openzone etc. (or whoever they have agreements with) then you get charged - which you'd expect as you're using a Wi-Fi hotspot that you'd normally pay for. If I'm out and about I just use the 3G connection on the data card anyway. With the package I'm on it's actually cheaper than paying for a Wi-Fi connection!

But if you're meaning that by using your Wi-Fi enabled phone, to connect to your home wireless network, you're being charged by Vodafone, that's outrageous!! It's the phone that's giving the ability to connect to the Wi-Fi, not the SIM card!!! i.e. in theory the phone could use Wi-Fi without having a SIM card in, if it wasn't for the fact that these days they (the manufacturers) won't let you access any features of the phone if there's no SIM card in it!

That's exactly what I'm talking about, I only surf at home when I'm on the couch, or in bed. Never used a public hotspot.

I've just got home. Yanked out the vodafone sim card and the PDA still connected to the wifi hub. So, as I thought, the tw@t at vodafone was talking utter cr@P.

Could your connection settings be set such that the GPRS data line is taking priority over the WiFi? Could be that when it tries to connect it goes for the connection that responds first by default, and if it establishes the GPRS first you would use that and be charged, as you are using the Vodafone net.
