Default a drop too much oil!!

    Hi all,

I've put a drop too much oil in the wife's astra.

It drinks the stuff like petrol so before our trip to wales i popped some oil in. Followed the normal steps - level surface, check level - low - top it up, wait, turn it over, wait check level and repeat. All was fine.

We've done our trip c300 miles and I checked the oil level again, it's high. Not enough to touch the wire but above the max mark. I have no smoke or any other effects, other than a noticable 'tappety sound'.

Any thoughts or suggestions (like will it do it any harm, would it cause the tappet noise, and should it be drained)?

    Thanks guys

too much oil won't cause the tapping noise..

it all depends on how much higher up the dipstick ( in mm) you are above max..

too much oil ( loads too much) can cause windage(slowing the crank) unless the sump has a baffle plate, blown oil seals ( internal pressurisation) and a tendancy to make the car smoke as too much oil is drwan round the breather system..

    how overfull is it?

    cheers mark,

It's about 3-4mm overfull (on the dipstick).

I would say it feels underpowered, but being a 1.6 8v there's no change there :-)

There's no smoke at all from it. Wasn't when I'd done it and there isn't now.

Given how it drinks it, it will probably be fine by the end of the week, but it's off for it's mot at the stealers tomorrow too

well, 3mm over isn't too bad and won't hurt it..and when they do a cat test on it, the high rpm won't be an issue..they don't take petrols to the rev limiter like they do diesels...

    Why do they do that???

The rev limiter is there to stop it breaking...It's OK to take it to the limiter, it just wouldn't do it much good to stay there all day.

If you see a Metro Blue SRi estate with a large 'animal' sticker in the back window on a Private Plate in Calne today/tomorrow give a wave, it's my wife off visiting her mum in Calne.
    It's Got a Vectra-C.Com sticker as well!
