    Celtic Re-map @ £399 (150bhp to 205 bhp)
Local Chip box gadget @ £499 (150 bhp to 185 bhp)

Neither. I'd like to see the proof that the Celtic remap gave 205bhp.

For £50 more than the local chip box you can get the BSR remap, which has a remapper unit so you can program/remove the map yourself. A few other guys have got the BSR for the 1.9 (as well as one or two of us, lol, having them for the 2.0T) and you only have to look at their comments to see what they think.

I would go for a box, either a tuning box or one of the remap boxes. Celtic won't give you 205bhp I'm afraid no matter what they claim (unless they fit a NOS kit along with the remap). The tuning boxes work very well, better that many remaps but if you have a DPF they are not an option. Also, the boxes kick out more smoke and use more fuel than the remaps usually, unless you have a very lean map in the box and then you won't be getting what you wanted. You can get very cheap tuning boxes to take in and out which for most people would be fine and often gives more power than the remap. If you strech to the remap boxes, you can stick them in and out still and you will get a much more civilized increase with better economy.

I've abused, sorry used both extensivly and even together and I think it falls to the simple questions below...

    1) how long do you want to keep it
    2) how many miles do you do
    3) how much are you willing to pay
    4) Do you have a DPF

If you want to keep it a long time or do alot of miles and are willing to pay or have a DPF then get a remap box. If you aren't going to keep it more than a year or two, don't do many miles, don't have a DPF then the tuning box is a good alternative and can be had for under £100.

Pretty good summary there I'd say - although if you were planning on keeping it for a couple of years, that's certainly long enough to get your money's worth out of a remap.

I have a tuning box. Caterman. And i also have a DPF and it's working just fine and i've had no issue's. Along with quite a few other's.
I dont understand were you get it's a complete no no with a DPF.
I know you know a hell of a lot more at this tuning carry on than me. But how is mine running great?????

it's no doubt running fine, as it's managing to regenerate often enough to cope with the extra soot that it's being forced to handle ( from the caterman box)..as long as it continues to regenerate correctly then you should get away with it..As nutron said, proper remaps force the DPF to regen far more often than the standard software, to protect it against the extra soot..something that no box will do, as they contain no tuning software for anything apart from the fuel rail

Thanks for the explanation mate. I now understand. Do you think the BSR remap will have this software to force the regen????
As i'm thinking of getting a BSR before Germany.

yep, all quality tuners will have intergrated this software into their mapping...Just when you buy the BSR ( from LMF no doubt) have a word and do mention it's for a DPF equipped vehicle...
